Supporting a Missionary
Minutes of Missions Committee meeting on May 12, 2005.Attending; Pastor Tim, Ted Hsia, Billy Pring, Cindi John
We discussed several things this committee can do that other committees are not doing. We decided to start with one or two projects.
First, we would like to present to the congregation the idea of supporting a missionary, and to find a missionary to support. The Division for Global Mission at http://www.elca.org is a great place to start. There are a number o individuals who are looking for aa supporting congregation, We thought of finding someone our church in Hawaii can relate to who is working in a Pacific Rim country.
Once someone is identified, we will get congregational approval and then budget approval. Our support may include fundraising.
Supporting a missionary involves a convenient to pray, to support financially and support with donations of supplies, i.e. used Christmas cards to create things that can be sold to rise funds for projects.
Cindi has agreed to research the web site.
Pastor Tim suggested Dave Person who is a missionary in Japan.
Ted will contact the local congregations to see if they are supporting a missionary currently. If not, they may want to join us in support of our missionary. (This increases the likelihood the missionary would come to Hawaii to give us a first hand report.)
We also discussed he Japanese Bible project. We aren't sure this is really under our committee, but rather the evangelism committee, Perhaps there is a member of the church who like to take on this project and oversee it, like placing the stickers in the front covers. Also, the question was raised to look at giving Bibles to non-Japanese couples who get married at Calvary.
Another project we discussed doing is to check the DGM web site for opportunities to send volunteers for a short term mission.
Next meeting will be June 20, 2005 at 5:30 pm at 1350 Ala Moana in the Party room.
