The meeting was held at 1350 Ala Moana Boulevard, at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday 17 August 2005.
Members present were: Pastor Tim Mason, Dr. Ted Hsia, Ms. Cindi John, and Ms Sherri Clark.
Ted had presented a “draft” proposal for submission to the Council meeting on Thursday, 18 August 2005. The intent was to brief the Council on the goal of the Mission Committee. This “draft” was reviewed.
CIndi had received material from Division of Global Mission (DMG) of ELCA, which she had forwarded to Ted, however, this had not been received. Ted indicated that he had telephoned DGM, and another packet was being sent.
Cindi felt it was premature for us to submit anything to the Council, before we had all studied the material that was to have been sent from DGM.
She also indicated that $79,000 was a very generous salary for a missionary. Pastor Tim led the discussion about the costs of supporting a missionary in the field, and that the actual salary given to a missionary was far less than $79,000. Cindi indicated we should reword the “draft” proposal to make this item clearer.
Cindi objected to our recommending Japan specifically, as we should not rule out other regions of Southeast Asia. She was not satisfied with the “draft,” and did not agree to having it submitted. When other Committee members explained the proposal was only a draft, she decided to leave the meeting before a vote was taken.
Pastor Tim mentioned having met a young lady from Oahu, who was a missionary in Cameroon; the meeting was at a Lutheran gathering. She asked whether our church could adopt her. He was obtaining more details about her.
Pastor Tim also noted that Pastor David Person from Tokyo may be over-adopted by many supporting churches, so we should seek the approval of DGM for any proposal that we decide upon.
The meeting was closed by Pastor Tim in prayer at 6:00 p.m.
